Pre-Debut

The legendary Asian producer, J.Y.P. is picturing something big in his mind. It is not a single male pop artist such as Rain, neither is it a female idol group like the Wonder Girls. Instead, this time, he is releasing his secret male idol group: 2PM. 

Long before their debut stage, rumors were already in the air that J.Y.P. has discreetly chosen seven most talented trainees, and prepared them to make a blast as the next generation idol star. Thus, the youngsters he picked were more powerful, more passionate, and of course, more skillfully built, wherein each of the members have their own unique specialty and strong potential.  

The members of 2PM all auditioned (except Nichkhun, who was scouted) to become part of JYP Entertainment. Some members held their auditions in other countries; for example, Park Jaebeom auditioned in the United States. Other members already had experience in the entertainment industry prior to their acceptance into JYP Entertainment; such as Kim Junsu, who had won various singing competitions; Ok Taecyeon, Lee Junho, Hwang Chansung, who had participated in the show, "Superstar Survival"; and Jang Wooyoung, who had won first place at the 2007 JYP’s Dance Audition in Busan.

2PM's and 2AM's training days were filmed in a documentary called "Hot Blood", which aired on Mnet. The show documented the time by time training program of the JYP trainees who were to be part of the group "One Day", as well as the elimination of three trainees from the group during the time.

2008 & 2009: Debut and early success

2PM debuted with their single "10 Points Out Of 10 Points" on September 4, 2008. On October 17, 2008, they started to promote "Only You", another song from their debut mini album, "Hottest Time of the Day".

On April 16, 2009, the group released their second mini album, "2:00PM Time For Change", which they began promoting on April 23. On May 9, 2009, they won their first Mutizen Song award on M!Countdown since their debut; in the same week, they won their second Mutizen on SBS Inkigayo. The group earned their third Mutizen the following week, completing the triple crown and making them ineligible to win for the following weeks. However, the award that had been eluding them - Music Bank - was quickly won soon after.

On June 11, 2009, 2PM began promotions for "I Hate You" on M!Countdown. On July 2 and 3, 2PM achieved first place on the M!Countdown and Music Bank charts for the song "I Hate You". They achieved the triple crown for the song on M!Countdown by July 16. On July 30, 2PM won the Only One Song award on M!Countdown.

September 2009: Controversy and rise to prominence

On September 4, 2009, articles surfaced on the internet regarding Jaebeom's posts from 2005 on his personal Myspace account, in which he expressed his dislike for Korea while still a trainee for JYP Entertainment. Jaebeom issued an apology regarding this matter. Then, he announced on his official fancafe that he would be leaving the group and returning to the United States, with plans of going back to school and bettering his understanding of music, and also apologized to the other 2PM members for not being a good leader and older brother to the group. Park Jin Young confirmed that he will respect the singer's decision, and that 2PM will continue on as a six-membered group. Additionally, due to the sensitive topic of Jaebeom's departure, all 2PM members were withdrawn from their regular appearances on variety shows.

End Of 2009

The group finished re-filming their music video for "Heartbeat", the title song of their first full-length album, without Jaebeom on October 31, 2009. During a press conference, it was revealed that Jaebeom's vocals would not be removed from the song. The day after the six-membered 2PM's full-length album was released, Park Jin Young released a statement saying that Jaebeom would return as a member of 2PM if he wanted to make a comeback, but indicated that his return was not imminent. In further support of Jaebeom's place in the group, the six 2PM members have also decided to distribute their income from their first album with him, sending him an equally divided amount of the earnings.

The group's first full length album, "1:59PM", was released on November 10, 2009. Both the album and title track, "Heartbeat", quickly rose to the #1 position on multiple music sales charts. The group made their first comeback performance, signifying the beginning of their promotional activities for the album, on M.Net's "O Good Concert" on November 12, 2009, subsequently making their KBS Music Bank, MBC Music Core, and SBS Inkigayo comebacks on November 13, November 14, and November 15, respectively.

On November 20, 2009, 2PM performed and was honored with two awards by the M.net Asian Music Awards (previously known as M.net KM Music Festival a.k.a. MKMF): the award for Best Male Group and Artist of the Year (the latter being one of the three most prestigious awards, or Daesang, at the show). The group paid homage to Jaebeom during their performance of "Again & Again", in which a spotlight was shown over Jaebeom's usual position in the dance formation and his vocals were not replaced.

On November 26, 2009, after two weeks of promotional activities for the "1:59PM" album, 2PM earned their first #1 on a TV music show (KBS Music Bank's "K-Chart") since the album's release, with "Heartbeat", which went on to take #1 on the K-Chart for three more weeks. In addition, "Heartbeat" achieved the Mutizen song award Triple Crown on SBS Inkigayo by being the #1 song in the Inkigayo "Take 7" chart for three weeks, the maximum amount of time for which a nominated song is eligible to win. On December 30, 2009, at Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)'s end of the year Music Festival, "Again & Again" was recognized as Song of the Year, winning with 57,060 votes.

2PM followed up end-of-2009 activities with the second single from their "1:59PM" album, "Tired of Waiting". The song was performed live for the first time at the SBS Music Festival on December 29, 2009. 2PM's promotion for the album ended with their SBS Inkigayo performance on January 17, 2010.

2010

On February 25, 2010, JYP Entertainment announced that Park Jaebeom would not be returning to 2PM, as his contract with the company had been permanently terminated. A fan meeting/press conference was held two days later with the six remaining members of 2PM and JYP Entertainment CEO, Choi Jungwook in attendance, where it was announced that although 2PM would continue promoting as six members, a new leader would not be chosen to replace Jaebeom.

In mid-April 2010, 2PM released image and video teasers for their third album, "Don't Stop Can't Stop", for which the group promised to showcase an even stronger side of themselves than before. The EP, containing six tracks, was released on April 19, 2010. The lead single, "Without U", quickly rose to the #1 position on six different music charts. The group made their television performance comeback on Mnet's music program, M! Countdown on April 22, 2010. This comeback helped them get seven #1 awards: 2 Mutizen (on SBS Inkigayo), 2 K-Chart (on KBS Music Bank), and Triple Crown (on M! Countdown). They finished promoting for their third album with a Goodbye Stage on M! Countdown and Special Stage on KBS Music Bank on June 19.

2PM also performed at the 8th Annual Korea Times Music Festival in Los Angeles, California on May 1, 2010; and at the Dream Concert in Seoul, South Korea on May 22, 2010.

On May 24, 2010, 2PM released the song "What's Your Celebration?" for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. The song samples K'Naan's Wavin' Flag.

2PM also finished nine shows as an opening act for their label-mates, popular girl group, Wonder Girls on the latter's United States headlining world tour. They came back to Korea on June 17 and restarted all their activities. 

They had their first concert in Seoul and Busan, which took place on July 31st, August 1st & August 7th, 8th.

On October 11, 2010, 2PM released their fourth extended play, "Still 2:00PM", with the lead single, "I'll Be Back" staying at #1 for two consecutive weeks in the Music Bank. On November 1, 2010, "Still 2:00PM" debuted unexpectedly on the 13th spot of the Billboard's World Album-Chart, though no specific promotions for the album were made in the US.

December 2010: Japan debut

As early as September 2010, it was announced that 2PM, famous for their beastly image, live performances, and named as one of the best in Asia, was going to debut in Japan.

As they were on the rise in the K-Pop industry, 2PM had no intentions of entering Japan’s music industry, but they were approached by around ten Japanese agencies with an offer to sign contracts; and eventually, the group signed under Sony Music Japan.

2PM opened their Japan showcase on December 8, 2010, with three showcase performances (at 2 P.M., 5 P.M., and 8 P.M. local time), at the Ryokoku Concert Hall. Having signed a contract with a large record company, Sony Music Japan, 2PM managed to fill up Ryokoku Concert Hall to its full 10,000 seats capacity for each of the showcase, which is rather unusual for a newcoming group, and it was probably the best debut index since Korean wave idols first entered Japan.

2PM performed "Don't Stop Can't Stop" and "Again & Again", where they showed a powerful dance performance. The group continued with the performance of "I Hate You", "Without U", and for the finale, their hit song, "Heartbeat". Then, they performed their debut song, "10 Points Out of 10 Points" for the encore.

Among female fans of various generations, 2PM seemed to have especially caught the hearts of young women in their 20's. With such a brilliant start, it was expected that they can leap into Japan's entertainment industry, and following the Korean wave of girl groups, 2PM is expected to cause sensation in the future. Even from the perspective of non-Hottest Japanese audience, after having seen 2PM perform, they’ve agreed that 2PM will be very popular.

Also, on the same day of their Japan showcase, the group released "1:59PM - Japan Special Edition", which debuted on the 9th spot at the Oricon Album Daily Chart.

2011: First step into Japan's music industry

Between February and March 2011, 2PM finally began their full-scale Japan promotions. The group released a new ringtone with their hit song, "Without U" on February 23, for a one day exclusive download, which included a special flash picture as bonus.

On February 26, 2011, 2PM participated in "Mezamashi Super Live in Okinawa", and on March 5, they participated in the "12th Tokyo Girls Collection" held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium. Moreover, on March 9, 2011, 2PM released their limited edition of "ALL ABOUT 2PM", and on March 30, they also released their "2PM First Concert in Seoul: Don't Stop Can't Stop" DVD.

During their participation in the "12th Tokyo Girls Collection", 2PM announced that they will be releasing their first Japanese single, "Take Off", which will be the ending song for the hit Japanese anime, "Ao No Exoricist", on May 18, 2011.

Even before its official release, the group’s Japanese debut single, "Take Off", swept Japan’s Tower Record online pre-order chart on March 7, 2011, with their various versions of the single: the limited edition type A (includes the music video of “Take Off”), the standard edition, and the limited edition type B (includes a special photo book of undisclosed photos), which were consecutively placed in the top three, respectively. Also, 2PM’s limited edition type A single, and limited edition type B single were each ranked 3rd and 5th in the HMV online chart, which reflected 2PM’s popularity in Japan.

However, this wasn’t the first time that 2PM has topped the Japanese charts. At the end of last year, prior to the release of their Japanese debut DVD, "Hottest", the group swept the top five rankings in Japan’s largest mobile ringtone chart, Rechochuku; while also topping the Tower Record and HMV charts, and even the Oricon DVD chart by beating Michael Jackson.

On April 13, 2011, 2PM’s Japanese debut single, "Take Off", got the #1 spot in USEN’s Weekly J-POP Chart, which is the first time a Korean group’s debut song placed first on the chart. Moreover, on April 14, the song also reached the #1 spot on the daily chart of the Japanese music lyric site, Uta Net Mobile.

Television Hosting

On December 2008, 2PM began to host the third season of MBC's "Idol Show". The segment ran from December 4, 2008 to March 26, 2009, with a total of seventeen episodes.

The group also starred in a reality show on M.net, titled "Wild Bunny", in which the members escaped the pressures of stardom by performing ten forbidden activities of idols. The show ran from July 21, 2009 to September 1, 2009, with seven episodes aired; the airing of the final episode, which coincidentally featured the members engaged in a Leader Olympics Game to select a new leader was postponed indefinitely, due to Jaebeom's internet controversy and his subsequent departure from the group.

In addition, Taecyeon and Wooyoung hosted SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System)'s weekly music show "Inkigayo", while Jaebeom and Chansung made regular appearances on "Introducing Star Friends". Since Jaebeom was voted off, Nichkhun replaced his position as the guest. Nichkhun and Wooyoung were also frequent guests on SBS's variety talent show, "Star King", between April and October 2009, with other 2PM members occasionally joining them.

Taecyeon also became a permanent cast member for the second season of "Family Outing", a celebrity variety show on SBS. Wooyoung was also a co-host of the KBS celebrity talk show, "Win Win". 

On March 2010, Junho returned as a permanent cast member of the sports variety show, "Dream Team 2", for which he was part of the pilot episode in September 2009, before having to withdraw due to Jaebeom's controversy.

On June 2010, Nichkhun signed on to be part of the popular MBC celebrity reality show, "We Got Married", where he will act as a make-believe husband to Victoria, a member of the Korean girl group, f(x).

Endorsements

On March 2009, 2PM was selected to model for EXR, a clothing company in Korea. Then, on July 2009, the members were selected as the representatives of foreign artists by the Thai government-led tourism campaign, "I Love Thailand", while Nichkhun was also selected by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as the face of their newest campaign, "Come to Thailand; Let's Take a Break!".

On August 2009, 2PM collaborated with the Body Shop in "Soft Hands, Kind Heart", a worldwide campaign that calls for the protection of children and teenagers against sex trafficking. The members acted as Korea's spokespeople for the campaign.

In late October 2009, a commercial film of 2PM promoting Hanami (a Thailand snack company) was released, which also included Jaebeom; the commercial was said to be filmed prior to his departure in September.

It was during November 2009 that several new endorsement deals were made for the group. The first of which is a commercial and print campaign for Market O's "Real Brownie" pastry. Shortly thereafter, the group endorsed the Samsung Corby mobile phone, one of the newest mobile devices in Samsung's popular "Anycall" series, both on television and on the Samsung website. 

2PM also endorsed Paris-Croissant Food Company's "Paris Baguette" bakery franchise, for which the group recorded a special Christmas song, and are featured in a series of commercials with popular Korean actress, Kim Tae Hee.

In 2010, 2PM signed on to endorse Coca-Cola, as well as the clothing company, SPRIS (also known as PONY). Also, members Junsu, Taecyeon, Nichkhun, and Wooyoung endorsed Cass Beer; while Nichkhun continued advertising for the Suzuki Jelato motorcycle in Thailand.

In mid-2010, 2PM was chosen, along with Girls Generation to be the spokesperson for Caribbean Bay. Shortly after, the members of 2PM (expect for Nichkhun) were chosen to sing the song "Fly to Seoul (Boom Boom Boom)" to support tourism in Korea. Due to the renewal of their endorsement deal with Samsung, 2PM recorded the song "Nori For U" for Samsung Anycall NORi.

On January 2011, 2PM was chosen as the new faces of the sporty clothing brand, NEPA, for which they signed a contract with, for one year.

On February 2011, Nichkhun became the first ever male spokesmodel for J.ESTINA, a popular jewelry brand worn by the beloved figure skater, Kim Yuna. Shortly thereafter, Nichkhun and his family were chosen to be the new spokesmodels for LG U+’s "International Calling 002 – Long Call, Small Fees", which was filmed in Thailand.

On March 2011, 2PM was chosen to model for Coca-Cola, for the second year in a row. Then, the group was also chosen, along with T-Ara to endorse Look Optical’s diverse collection of eyeglasses and sunglasses; while Nichkhun endorsed cosmetic brand, It’s Skin "Prestige Cream Descargo", also known as "Snail Cream".

On April 2011, 2PM (alongside Hyun Bin, Kim Sarang, Kim Hyun Joong, Jang Geun Suk) was named as Lotte Duty Free’s new models for their "Enter-Tour-Ment" marketing campaign. Also, the group was selected as the models for Thailand’s largest perfume brand, Eversense.

In addition, 2PM now endorses Calvin Klein South Korea, as well as, It's Skin, a South Korean cosmetics and skin care brand.
